Skadi and the Hill People, part 1 of 6
by katie
Here comes our longest Skadi story yet! The idea for making “Skadi and the Hill Folk” came from two things I like a lot and wanted to draw- hillbilly/Appalachian culture, and scary stories. Or more specifically, the legend of Sawney Bean, and the Blue Fugates of Kentucky.

The story of Sawney Bean is a scary one! Bean was a Scottish cannibal- he lived in a cave with his wife and kids, many of whom were the product of incest. Read the grisly details here!

There isn’t a whole lot of information on the Blue Fugates, unfortunately…however, they were also a reclusive incestuous family. They’re a bit more sympathetic though, seeing as they didn’t have many options for dating, being blue-skinned and all. They didn’t eat and pickle lonely travelers as far as I know, either. If you don’t believe me when I say that there are real-life blue folk out there, just google methemoglobinemia . And read more about The Fugates here!
Anyhow, I hope you guys keep coming back to see what happens! Luke is the one who’s better at story structure, so making this was a bit out of my comfort zone. It also has a lot of gross character designs- another thing that is new for me. That said, this story was fun to make!

The Sawney Bean clan also inspired Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes!

It’s a nice legend, the Edinburgh tourism industry really gets off on it over here. That and all the closes that were bricked up during the plauges, people left to die and their vengeful spirits still haunt the streets! Woo!

OMG! You mean… the Smurfs were CANNIBALS???!!!
…On second thought, that DOES make a lot of sense

and here I thought my 7th grade science teacher was full of it when she said blue people were real. I admit I am excited to look up these things.

I think I can solve the blue skin legend. If you drink colloidal silver, you can get blue skin.. perhaps these folks water source was abundant in silver.

My Ancestors lived in the Allgäu, an once isolated Part of the German Alps. I never heard about Canibalism there, but they did other nasty Things. For Example, I’m immune against Chicken- and Swineflu because my DNA features both Species…
