Dumm News Bulletin!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 by luke

Does it feel like it’s been a year? Well, it has been….almost! May 5th, 2009, will mark the one year anniversary of Dumm Comics . By May 5th, we’ll have brought you over 260 original Dumm Comics (not even including the guest comics), and we’re ready to bring you 260 more. That’s right, we’re trekking on for another year! We’ve got big things planned for this year. Big changes and a few surprises are currently in the works, so stay tuned!

Alright, I’ll throw out a few minor teasers….

For one, Skadi will be launching an epic 6-part storyline starting May 6th, called Skadi and the Hill People. Katie and I are putting some extra love into it, and we think you’ll like it. Also, you can look forward to a lot more multi-episode Skadi storylines in year 2 of Dumm Comics. We really want to start stretching our epic storytelling legs.

Also, as most of you know, the esteemed Head Dummy, Sean Szeles is leaving us. Yet, we’ve procured a new talented and hilarious cartoonist to take up the Tuesday mantle. They say a fool is born every minute, yet a Dummy is a rare sight indeed.  However, we feel that our new addition to the Dumm Line-up will meet our high standard of Dummnitude. Some of you may know who the new Dummy is, but we’re not naming any names just yet! Oh the suspense!

TTPH Most Cinematic Award!!! - Sergio J. A. Ragno III

Monday, April 6th, 2009 by Sean

The last of the Through The Port-Hole contest entries, but certainly not the least (in fact, it’s the MOST), belongs to Sergio J. A. Rango III for Most Cinematic!

There are many things I like about this comic including it’s overall structure and shot selection.  I can just imagine this being animated all serious-like with the eloquent narration over the top of it.  When I look at this comic, I can hear the crashing of the waves, and the cries of the seagulls.  Plus, I love how the Captain is waxing poetic and going on and on, and then Bam! is knocked down a peg by the seagulls.  The pacing is great!

I guess if I were to give a little constructive criticism, it would be that the actual gag panel isn’t super clear.  Perhaps if it were a wider shot, we could see more of what it happening.  Also, although the framing in the second to last panel works great, it gets confusing when the seagulls turn their heads.  It kinda looks like they’re eating him or something, even though I know that’s not the case.  I hope you don’t mind me pointing these things out Sergio!

You can check out more of Sergio’s work here: http://gnerds.comicgenesis.com/

or on DeviantArt here: http://sergexiii.deviantart.com/

Thanks again to everyone who entered the contest! It was great to see everybody’s interpretation of the Captain.  I hope you all enjoyed seeing each other’s as well!
