I worked in a arcade in Bakersfield, CA for about 3 months and I can totally see the frustration there. The policy at my arcade was “no refunds”, but due to the large amount of loose change I’d collect from clogged games and stuff, I usually pocketed it and then issued refunds through the night as funding allowed. Well, unless you were a huge prick, I’ve had a few people who were total dicks about it and I quickly pointed them to the large “no refunds” sign posted above the service desk.
It could have most likely been a faulty switch in the coin slot. They (the coin slots) just had a cherry switch that was soldered to a wire that went to the rest of the board, you may have had better luck using the second slot, or not. Those arcade cabinets could be total dicks sometimes.
What made it worse was my boss didn’t trust ANYONE besides himself to have access to the cabinets, so any keys required to open them up or to get change required him to come in shop and he only came in shop on Sundays, so if there was a bigger issue then a clog or a game that just needed to be re-set, me and all of the customers were SOL. You know, because I was going to steal $300.00 in quarters.
What was even worse was in the summer, he had a policy where it had to be 90+ degrees OUTSIDE before I could turn on the first A/C unit in the arcade. I don’t know if he really understand the concept that these machines were basically huge computers left on for 12 hours a day constantly running, but the arcade got seriously hot. One day I said fuck it and I turned on both A/C units because people literally had sweat dripping in their eyes and the next day my boss called me up at like 7AM after I had closed to bitch me out for turning on the A/C units.
Still, fun job, wish we had an arcade in our area.
That sounds like a fun place but a bad job! There’s no way your boss made that fun!
Man! Those were the days :) Good and bad!
Are there even arcades around anymore?
Around here, there’s one in the Burbank Mall, there’s Blipsy Barcade (highly recommended), and Family Arcade. Japan Arcade in Little Tokyo was awesome, but closed recently. Boo.
I gotta try the Blipsy Barcade!
