I’m starting to miss Wicked Wickle a lot, that comic had a lot of potential, at least this brings back fond memories of why it’s not on the site anymore…
If this comic were Wicked Wickle, there’s a good chance we’d have gotten the same Sorry Charlie message over 4 weeks, instead of a new picture for every week of hiatus. That’s something you’ve gotta hand to Robert Iza & in fact, most artists on Dumm. So, yay! :) Sorta.
the time he spent on these pictures couldve been used to actually make a strip
That’s an excellent idea! One quick sketch takes exactly the same time as a comic page of at least three panels. I mean, they’re the same size, right?
Wicked Wickle only had a couple repeat away messages, most of them were unique… Also the story in Wicked Wickle was well thought out and flowed pretty well, the story in this comic doesn’t flow at all and sometimes you’re left scratching your head and wondering what’s going on in the strip that was posted. This guy really needs to just leave Dumm and let someone with more talent take over.
Sorry Charlie was reused for at least four times – though never consecutively. Wicked Wickle was on the whole a better comic, but then it started out as one of the top Dumm comics in the first place. Robert Iza’s story telling skills are limited in comparison, but Wicked Wickle was written by someone other than the artist. But then EIN has really excellent colouring and Wicked Wickle didn’t have that. Artists on Dumm are picked by their colleagues, not by the readership. We the readers don’t get to say who deserves to stay or not.
I dunno y’all, this feels like the kind of stuff I used to pull in high school when I couldn’t get my act together to turn in a paper. “Uh my computer broke”
But, who knows! It’s a shame because this comic is real cute and I’m obsessed with hamburgers. I wanna see what happennnnnsssss gat damn.
This is stupid funny. Like the punchline is on all of you.
I know a trollface when I see one! Laughed hard & good at this one. You go, Iza! Serves ‘em right. :)
I’m inferring EIN’s slightly inflamed eye is a sign of sleep deprivation. Time to get some shut-eye!
Thomas, in the real world, deadlines are important. As much as you want to stick it to the “boss” the “company” suffers when you make things late. The idea of “you can be late as you want, laugh at the mean trolls” comes across as immature.
Robert, I do understand that computer troubles can be tough but you should have revealed this BEFORE Wednesday. You know teachers in high school and college want you to tell them ahead of time when you have computer trouble: they don’t want to hear anything on the due date.
Ryu, I think you’ve missed the memo. We the readers are not Robert Iza’s boss. We may be disappointed, but we don’t pay him. He owes us exactly nothing. He may have an obligation to his colleagues on Dumm, but that’s between them, not us.
What you’re also missing is the ironic point that Robert’s delay on this comic IS in fact due to “real world deadlines”. As I understand it, every artist on Dumm has a real paying job in the animation industry. And I know for a fact that “normal” office hours don’t exist in that industry. When you’ve got to finish something, you’ve got to work on it. Your side projects may suffer from it.
A further point in general: Sorry Guys didn’t update for several weeks and got exactly no flack for it. And by not updating, I mean David Gemmill didn’t even post a Sorry Charlie or something similar. It’s just Robert Iza putting his neck out and admitting his delay that gets the trolls out of the woodwork.
But in a way we are his boss. On this website he is writing for someone else: the readers of Dumm Comics. The purpose of Dumm Comics is to provide weekly entertainment. While it is true that there may be irregular hours and strange circumstances, the other authors also have jobs in the same industry and a reader pointed out that they usually get their things in. Also once weekly is one of the lighter loads in the webcomic world. Some other authors have to update every day or every few days per week.
It may be true that he has a much stronger work commitment than others, and perhaps he is trying his hardest. But if this is the case maybe a once a week comic is too much for him and maybe another person may be more suited for the “job”.
@ Ryu: It’s more like Dumm is the college newspaper and we’re undergraduates reading it. And the Dumm artists are students several years ahead of us. They’re not working for us, they’re working for themselves, though they do like to entertain people. We benefit from their willingness to create and share their artwork. But the most important work for students is their study – the real world jobs these artists work at. So that sometimes gets in the way of the newspaper’s schedule.
Also – to get back at your other metaphor – at school and in college you’re not working *for* the teacher as you might work for a boss. You’re working for yourself and the teacher is there to guide you. So even if as a reader you consider yourself the equivalent of a teacher expecting a paper – which to me seems ridiculous – you’re still not in a position where the artists are working *for* you and owing you something.
Also – yes, the other artists are working in the same business. This does not imply they have the same job, the same amount of work or that they’re working at the same pace. One artist is in a situation where he has time to create several pages a week, some others don’t. That’s just the way it is.
damn, man. can’t say i’m not disappointed whenever i load up dumm and see another week pass by with no update. not angry, because that would be dumb, just sad, kinda. how long has it been now? an entire month? yowza. a person up there mentioned wicked wickle, and they are right on the money. this is essentially what that guy did too. is he a bad person because of it? absolutely not. are you? hell no! it happens! :)
i think the good thing about this is, is that you know how many people cared to read your comic, with all the angered posts down here. in a really messed up way, that’s kind of sweet. terrible, but sweet.
looks like dumm needs to start bringing in some new blood in the meantime. you know things are getting a bit “off” when monday is completely out of commission.
a few posters have said you’re trolling with this delay stuff… but I can’t believe that. that’d be a pretty messed up thing to do – just being antagonistic for antagonistic sakes.
He’s definitely not trolling. I don’t think the Dumm administration would allow him to do that.
I think Dumm administration is a thing that hardly exists – if at all. For one thing, these comment sections hardly get moderated, it seems. For another thing, we might have gotten a sort of explanation of David Gemmill’s continued absence at Dumm. People were worrying about him. This probably means that all Dumm artists are really busy at the moment.
One eternity later…
Hope your computer or whatever is sorted soon :)
Another Dumm comic in its death throes. Truly a sad thing to behold :/
Guest Comic intermission? just a thought.
He should strongly consider having guest comics.
He’s probably scared at this point one of those guests artists will replace him.
The thing too is that I love the art style and the mushroom cop storyline seemed interesting. But pacing is important when making a story, both in the progression of the story and when you release the content.
I can’t bother with Mondays when there is no artist, I don’t want to watch a short video, so I don’t come Tuesday. Wednesday is consistently not there, and that’s his prerogative to post or not. I’m not going to get mad about it, as I rarely came here on Wednesday anyhow because his comic is not my cup of tea. Lately I’ve been showing up just to see whether there’s a comic or not, and read the ridiculous vitriol spewing in the comments section. Now that’s dull too, I think it’s all copy/paste from the previous week. Saturday and Sunday I’m too far behind on to go back and read.
So what, Thursday & Friday?
I guess I’ll just be done. Thanks, Dumm artists, for all the entertainment you’ve given me since May of 2008. I’ve been reading you since the beginning. Thank you for Big Pants Mouse, Through the Porthole, Skadi, 1930s Nightmare Theatre, and Earthward, Ho! Your original line-up brought me laughs and smiles when I was in a dark place in my life. Thank you for Frog Raccoon Strawberry, which I always knew would end up being the best thing here. Thank you for Mech Lab, which was brilliant, and for Sorry, Guys! which was not (but it didn’t have to be – it was great anyhow). I’ll miss this place. Ah hell, who am I kidding? I already miss it, I miss it as it was. Now it’s just sad.
Don’t go away angry. Just go away.
That comment was for another comment. Welp… now I look like an Asshole. Sorry Luna.
Ahahahhahaha i fucking love the nervous expression there. dear iza i still love you, signed your fan pope crunch <3
Get fucked iza.
Get some perspective NoveItyFishHead
I’m more than happy with a good picture like this. Good times. Love your work Iza.
You know, I always laugh when people start bitching about a comic constantly being late or on hiatus and then droves of people defend it and tell people they “have no right”.
It’s kind of like if you have a neighborhood cat and you kept feeding it for weeks at a time and then just stopped and the cat kept bugging you. The cat has no right to sit there and bitch and demand food, but at the same time, isn’t it your fault for feeding the fucking thing to begin with?
I am sure Dumm Comics could find someone else to fill a slot and if the author of this series can’t keep up with a measly single page once a week when others are able to churn out whole pages with panels and stuff on a weekly basis, maybe they need to just give the spot up to someone else.
I seriously understand once in awhile, stuff happens, you get really drunk and shit your pants or your grandma dies or whatever, but this has been an on going thing since they started. Besides that, the comic is generally confusing and not in a good way either. A lot of the characters aren’t introduced or anything, they just existed and so they lack any sort of depth, we don’t know who they are or anything, all we know is they fight hamburgers and hang out with ghosts and shit.
Bla bla bla, if you don’t like it, don’t read it. Go choke on some marbles.
Also if you don’t have your computer, then I can only assume next week we are going to get double the normal content, right? Riiight? Pfft of course not.
Zero times two is still zero, friend.
Love the face. This is an adorable little comic with wonderful characters and a lot of heart. Shit happens in life, and we all miss a beat. I love this comic and look forward to when the hiatus is lifted (read when you actually get some time to put towards it Iza). Hope that time comes sooner than later but I’ll keep showing up on Wednesday to check on EIN and company. Keep up the awesome work!
