Ha! That’s awesome! I totally remember that debug mode! I loved it! You could see the edge of the level artwork and place enemy sprites where ever you wanted! It was great!

I had the same situation two times in my younghood, but it was with my Sega. My dad showed me how to do that debug mode trick in Sonic 1 since he read my Game Informers too.. although now I think it was a trick to get me to the Final Zone faster and get me to bed!!

I did not have that problem as a kid, as my parents would read comic books – usually X-Men – to me and my sister during bedtime. Its so cool having nerds for parents! =D
