…
Phew! That was a long one. That’s all the Jakey and Sassafras you get for now. If you liked the conclusion, or the whole Kablooey storyline, please don’t forget to “like” it. That’ll help me decide whether to do more long form stories starring Jakey, or maybe the both of them, if their paths ever cross again.
I need a little pause to reset, so I got a bunch of friends to draw me some Kablooey pinups. Next week, I’ll post them here in a guest art gallery. And they’re all darn good, too!
Wanna do your own Kablooey pinup? Draw Jakey the Jerk, or Sassafras Vallee, or both of ‘em. Send it to me before next weekend, and I’ll add it to the gallery. My Jakey comics are in B&W, crudely inked with a ballpoint pen. You could make yours look similar to mine, or you could do it in any style, with shades or colors or whatever. Also, if you want, you can redesign the characters in whatever way you like. As long as they’re still Jakey and Sassafras in some way. It could just be a pinup, with them walking the mountain trail or what have you. Or, if you want to do a short comic or joke, etc., that could be fun, too. And of course I’ll link your websites, etc., for the readers. Just email it to me: cgarrison[at]bham.rr.com (with a real @, though).

I’ve really enjoyed this story! I think you’ve really been improving steadily since you started this comic and I look forward to more! :)
Thanks a bunch, but I don’t think I’ve necessarily improved so much, really. It’s just that there are a lot of nice subtle things I can do in a long form story, that won’t work in a one off, or even a two- or three-parter. When I get back to the short pieces, some folks are gonna say, “This is the same old, horrible Zoo Laffs!”
Well! It looks like Jakey is not the jerk here at all! Sassafras dont be such a stupid >:(
Also, panel 3 is ADORABLE.
Also, are there seriously channels where you can watch people play battleship? O_o
Re: panel 3 … It seems to me that, in live action, the characters maintain eye-contact practically all the time, even though it’s not realistic. Because on screen, it just doesn’t look right to have them looking all over the place, the way people do. So, I’m not sure you can do it much in comics, either. But it seems to work okay, in this panel, to show her averting her eyes. But then, she’s also looking around in panels 6, 11, 13, 14, 17, and 21. That’s a lot, but I guess it’s all right (?). Maybe you can do it more in comics than in movies.
Re: Battleship … That’s just a commercial! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJBNUGoYp08
I’m pretty sure it was a commercial advertising Battleship ;D
FFFF DAMN I was one minute too late and Chris beat me to it
I sank your battleship!
I really liked this longer story. You’ve gotten a lot better at this over the months. I would really enjoy a future episode where Jakey messes up Nick Blintz (even if he turns out to be a nice guy for all I care), which in the process turns on Sassafras and gets him some proper action. Poor Jakey… he was a cool guy for once. :(
Jakey really could end up ramming the real Nick Blintz. Who knows? … There are a million ways the story could go from here, and I haven’t yet decided on anything. Suggestions are always welcome from the Peanut Gallery.
What got me was the panel where she says “Plus you’re like, a little goat or whatever.”
Oh, how I lol’d…
I pretty much figured you’d end it like this, because hey, women are bitches and are all shallow and bla bla bla. At least you ended it nicer then some of the other ones.
But I digress, you are right, in some ways it’s still the same horrible old Zoo Laughs.
Specifically how would you have ended it, JK?
I don’t want a flawed character of mine to represent every member of their gender. How can I say she’s this or that, without your interpreting it as “women” are this or that? Do you also react that way to everything else you read or watch?
(by the way, they’re not Laughs … They’re Laffs)
>because hey, women are bitches and are all shallow
Talk about projecting.
Woah! I do the same thing to CRT TVs! Foul beasts from ages past >:D
she makes a lot of great faces in this comic.
You inked this with a ball point? It looks amazing! I really enjoyed the whole arc.
That was a fun comic and the best Zoo Laughs yet and yeah, for inking it with a ball point it looks great!
Laffs, pardon me
These comics aren’t always good for a laugh. Hence the misspelling.
Awesome as always! I really liked Sassafras, but then she shows her materialistic side that steamrolls over her heart, and I lost interest.
Jakey should do the same.
Chris, I’m not clear about the little sequence where she talks about her TV appearance — why does she drag it out like that? Is she slipping into “promo” mode or something?
My first thought was that she was hatching some plan, and when Jakey watched her on TV, she’d announce to the audience that she was dumping the Blintz for Jakey, or some other surprise.
Oh, that would really be something! But no, my thought here was just that, yes, she slips into promo mode. It’s just kind of drawn out as she slowly forgets his feelings and gets excited about her fame.
“The Blintz,” haha.
It was a great multi-part story, but I think it might have been split into too many parts for my liking. :) I missed the old “different animal every week or two” kind of thing. Long-running stories are good but there are drawbacks to it being only one day a week of course.
On a side note, I thought that maybe Sassafras had goat horns under her hat (even though she was wearing a normal hat in the first comic). Didn’t want to say anything til now, in case it was a spoiler.
I wish I’d had her take her hat off at some point, revealing that her hair is up in two buns. But somehow it didn’t happen.
Damn. I was gonna guess that she kissed him and he headbutted her. “I SAID I DON’T DO HIPPIE CHICKS!”
Of all the long form comics on here, I think yours is the only one I legitimately enjoy and think is worth reading from week to week. Usually with big storylines I like to read comics in bulk, but it worked here, keep it up. It probably helps that you do more than 4 frames a week (bu dum tsh).
I love how shallow Sassafras turned out to be.
She seems shallow in that moment, but … Can we really blame her? She’s going out with a guy already, who’s world-class cute, whose company she enjoys, and who’s probably a lot more on her wavelength. And now she meets and kinda likes this new guy, who’s really short and rude. She’d be pretty crazy to jump ship now, I reckon.
But hey, none of that was conveyed in the story. All we see is her lust for fame.
Addendum: I also like Skadi.
I should hope so! I think the whole Dumm roster is awesome.
Gosh, I got a LOT of likes today! How much of that is from me reminding folks about the like button, I don’t know. I’ll just start reminding y’all every week.
So, okay, Champsters. It looks like our time together is winding down. Keep on truckin’, and I’ll see you on down the line.
Ugh, this situation is way to close to my heart. One second, she props you up on a pedestal, you’re feelin’ mighty tall. Then on a second thought, she kicks it out from under you, and has the courtesy to explain it’s not her, it’s you. Who’s the jerk supposed to be, again?
I really enjoyed this comic about Jakey, but I hated how it ended. :\ I kind of wanted to see them get together, but meh. Still a good comic, and I think your comics are better when it’s a continued story rather than just a 1 day comic! It lets us learn more about the character other than the obvious!
(Example: I learned that Jakey isn’t a total jerk afterall, and even he has feelings that can be hurt)
Please do more of these type of comics! Thanks!
This isn’t just a criticism against you, it’s about all of Dumm: I hate the continuing storylines! I want my comics in nice little single servings. Dumm used to never be like this, but lately it’s been 5 out of 7! Still, the site is great… it’s just not what I would prefer.
As for Zoo Laffs – I think it’s getting better, and Jakey the Jerk is my favorite character so far. Keep up the good work!
Really liked seeing this comic go on for a while look forward to seeing more. and sadly to say i have seen previews for a battle ship movie…
Hmm oh well looks like Status quo got to them.
What I don’t get is did she broke off their friendship or their one panel “love”?
Does her agent really hate cartoon goat people enough to not have her be around one even for a bodyguard/Brofriend? Is her Agent a cat?
Man I’m kicking my self for making that Adventure Time connection and hearing John Di Maggio for the voice of Jake.
It was fun experiment and lead to some non-rejection based laughs. Unless you count being punted off a mountain rejection? Then at least it wasn’t typical romantic type.
I liked this arc. It was funny having Jakey headbutt as a response to a variety of situations rather than just having it show how angry he is over being shot down again.
I see you put the Omega symbol on Jakey’s shirt at the end. I would have gone with the Ares symbol, but Omega is funny as a ‘the end’ tie-in.
This human/animal setup reminds me of Roger Rabbit, with the whole discrimination against toons angle. The ‘little goat or whatever’ panel was great. It feels like if this situation were somehow actually happening, that’s exactly what she’d say.
I liked the crap out of this whole arc, it was awesome!
This arc was awesome. If you span this off, it could carry it’s own weight (I’m convinced of it now).
I got the perfect follow up!
A BEACH OFF! With Nick vs. Jakey!!
I mean, Jakey’s already got an iron pumpin beach bod, so why the heck not?
Also, I’d love a one shot with him trying to watch the interview with Doug Ralston in a bar (cuz his TV is broke) and getting interrupted by other Zoo Laffs denizens, telling him what he should do to get over her or whatever.
