I think I see where this is going because, if I am right, I have done something very similar.
One christmas when me and my younger brother were kids, we were both steeped in Power Rangers mania and wanted a White Tiger Zord. We saved and pooled our money, and when mom took us out shopping we both said we wanted to buy the Tiger Zord. Mom tryied to dissuade us, but we insisted until she bought it for us.
When we got home, Mom pulled a second Tiger Zord out of the closet. She said she had wanted to give it to us for Christmas, and she fetl really sad that she wouldn’t be able to do that now.
My brother and I felt so bad we were never able to enjoy the darn thing. And to this day, whenever anybody talks about wanting to get themselves something around Crhistmas, the rest of the family will chide the person away from the act by simply saying “Remember: White Tiger Zord!”
My mother did a pretty good job with keeping the whole gift thing a huge secret. She always told my sister and me that if we found something while snooping, that we would not get that gift. Somehow that kept us from digging around. That did not keep us from one little ritual we shared around 5 AM on every Christmas morning. I would go into my sister’s room and we would tell each other what we got each other as a gift… after getting 3 guesses each, of course. This somehow relieved some of that pent up angst that had been building for weeks even though we would be ripping into everything within a couple of hours. I haven’t thought about this in a long, long time. I’m going to email my sister right now. Thanks for the inspiration, Gabe! Great strip as always.
This comic and the opening reminds me a lot of old Christmas-y Movie openings. As soon as I started reading it, I kind of started thinking of “A Christmas Story”, which we watch every year on Christmas Eve for the last 15 years, it’s kind of a family tradition.
I never had a surprise gift as a child as I can remember …dad isn’t much of a shopper and wasn’t home much so it was left to mum and me to get the gifts..we used to go Christmas shopping in July or August and mum let me loose in a massive toy shop saying I could get anything I wanted within a budget…when we got home mum used to have me help wrap them (I used to like wrapping my own so I could have a good look at the boxes lol) then they were put away in whatever secret place she hid them…it used to be so hard waiting..tho by Christmas I had forgotten half of what I was getting..and if any new toy came out before Christmas that I ‘needed’..it was time to tell my grandma what I wanted for Christmas..As to buying gifts for others..mum and dad bought for eachother…I picked my own..and I bought gifts for..my dog lol
Wow, a two-parter! Two typos, though. Recieve = receive (panel 1) & yeary = yearly (panel 4).
Thanks! Will update! :)
Aww :(
What would be worse is thinking you’ve seen your present, being really excited and not getting it lol

We NEVER found out what we were getting! My parents were so good at all the secret stuff, even to this day!

No problem! Glad you guys are still close.
Man, our Christmas’ would start early too. We would get up so early my parents had trouble staying awake.

Christmas stories are like that, they stay with you for so long, especially when your family keeps talking about it for years. :)
You guys are close. :)
