This is the winning strip from the 4CR contest. Congratulations Jeremy Kuehnau, thanks for the great story, and thanks to Nick Rumas who was instrumental in organizing the whole thing.
This is so so good, it made me sad and happy because I can relate to it quite a bit. My Dad went through a rocky time and lost his job, he used to do a paper round! He saved up and bought me a Commodore 64, we used to play it together and try and map out some of the games, one of them was like a maze, and he would get out some graph paper and draw every route, we did this after school for ages. Anyway, now I work as an animator for a video game company and hes happily retired.
I’m gonna come out and say it: when I heard this guy had won the contest, I couldn’t get past “former Dumm Comics comment troll wins Dumm contest”.
But this story was really cool. His mom was really cool and I hope she enjoyed seeing this strip.
Lastly, it’s funny that his humble 8-bit system is still working after all this time while current superpowered consoles hand out red rings of death and wonky firmware updates like it’s going out of style.
Aww… that’s darling and absolutely wonderful, mr. Swarr! I hope his mom sees it :}

Brilliantly told stories as per usual Gabe! Woo!
Urr… I just need to add that he did a Paper round between jobs, he didn’t lose a paper round! That would be silly.

This story made me cry!! The things parents will do for their kids.
Also, StarTropics is my most favorite game, ever!!!
that was a sweet story :). Brings back memories of my childhood in the 80s
This is pretty much my life.
Yes, this is really sweet, Gabe. I agree with Jeremy on the overcomplication of modern video games. At their best, games bring people together.
